What Is the SRS / Airbag System?

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is the vehicle’s network of safety components that work together during a collision to protect occupants. It includes the airbag control module (ACM), front and side airbag inflators, seat belt pretensioners, the occupant classification module (OCM), clock spring, and an array of crash sensors positioned throughout the vehicle.

After any deployment event, the airbag control module stores crash data and locks out the system until the data is cleared or the module is replaced and programmed. Seat belt pretensioners and deployed airbags must be replaced, and the entire SRS system must be restored to OEM specifications before the vehicle can be returned to service. Each replacement component must be correctly installed, programmed, and verified.

We provide complete SRS system restoration services, from crash data retrieval and module programming to OCM configuration and full system verification, following OEM procedures for every vehicle platform we service.

What We Cover

We provide complete SRS and airbag system restoration services following OEM procedures for domestic and import vehicles throughout Southern California.

Airbag Module Programming & Replacement

OEM programming for replacement airbag control modules (ACM), including software installation, VIN writing, variant coding, pairing, and post-programming system initialization and verification.

Crash Data Retrieval

Complete extraction of crash event data stored in the airbag control module for insurance, legal, and repair documentation, plus evaluation of whether the module can be reused.

SRS Scan & Warning Light Diagnosis

Full diagnostic scan of SRS components to identify active and stored faults, then investigate the specific fault code and repair path needed to clear the airbag warning light.

Occupant Classification Module (OCM)

OCM programming, configuration, and seat mat calibration after seat or airbag system repairs so passenger airbag enable/disable logic operates correctly.

Pretensioner & Clock Spring Diagnosis

Diagnosis of seat belt pretensioner faults after collision or deployment, plus clock spring (spiral cable) faults that can trigger SRS warning lights and disable airbag or steering controls.

Post-Deployment Restore & Wiring

Complete SRS restoration after deployment, module programming, component verification, wiring and connector inspection, and a full system scan before the vehicle is returned to service.

When Are SRS / Airbag System Services Needed?

SRS services are required after any collision event involving airbag deployment, as well as for diagnosis and repair of active SRS faults or warning lights.

After Airbag Deployment

Any collision that deploys airbags requires complete SRS system restoration. The airbag control module locks after deployment and must be replaced and programmed, along with all deployed inflators and triggered pretensioners.

Collision Repairs

Even in collisions where airbags did not deploy, crash sensors, wiring, and SRS components can be damaged and must be inspected, diagnosed, and repaired as part of the complete collision repair.

SRS Warning Light

An illuminated airbag warning light indicates a fault in the SRS system that must be diagnosed and repaired. The vehicle should not be driven until the fault is identified, an active SRS fault can prevent airbag deployment in a collision.

Module Replacement

Any replacement of the airbag control module or occupant classification module requires OEM programming before the system will function. An unprogrammed replacement module will leave the SRS system inoperable.

Seat Belt System Faults

Seat belt pretensioner faults, retractor issues, and buckle tensioner codes require SRS system diagnosis. Triggered pretensioners must be replaced and verified before the SRS system will clear.

What Does an SRS Scan Find?

Select a topic to see what a complete SRS diagnostic scan checks, ACM, OCM, pretensioners, clock spring, crash data, sensors, and communication faults, before codes are cleared.

Airbag Control Module

A full SRS scan reads the airbag control module (ACM) for active and stored fault codes that keep the restraint system locked out or the warning light on. After deployment, the ACM stores crash data and enters a locked state that prevents re-use. Scan results guide whether the module must be replaced and programmed with OEM software, including VIN write, variant coding, and system initialization, before the SRS system will function.

Service Process

Every SRS and airbag system service follows a structured process, from on-site diagnosis through OEM programming and full system verification.

01

Arrive On-Site

Mobile technician arrives at your collision center, repair shop, or dealership with OEM-level programming and scan equipment, no vehicle transport required.

02

Full SRS System Scan

Complete diagnostic scan of SRS components, ACM, OCM, pretensioners, clock spring, and crash sensors, to identify all active and stored faults.

03

Crash Data & Evaluation

Crash event data is retrieved from the ACM when needed for documentation and to determine whether the module must be replaced or can be restored.

04

Module Programming

Replacement ACMs and OCM units are programmed with OEM software, including VIN writing, variant coding, configuration, and system initialization.

05

Component Verification

Deployed inflators, triggered pretensioners, clock spring, seat mat calibration, and wiring repairs are verified so each replacement component is correctly installed.

06

Final System Scan

A complete post-service SRS scan confirms all components are communicating, no fault codes remain, and the restraint system is fully operational before delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions About SRS & Airbag Systems

Common questions about airbag system diagnosis, module programming, and SRS restoration.

What is the SRS system?
SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System, the complete network of safety components designed to protect occupants during a collision. It includes the airbag control module (ACM), front and side airbag inflators, seat belt pretensioners, the occupant classification module (OCM), clock spring, and crash sensors positioned throughout the vehicle. The SRS system works together with the seat belts to minimize occupant injury. Any fault in the system can prevent airbags from deploying correctly in a collision, which is why SRS warning lights must be diagnosed and repaired immediately.
Can an airbag module be reset after deployment?
In most cases, the airbag control module must be replaced, not reset, after deployment. When airbags deploy, the ACM stores crash data and enters a locked state that prevents re-use. A replacement ACM must be sourced and programmed with OEM software, including the correct VIN, variant coding, and system initialization. Some refurbished modules are available, but any replacement module, new or refurbished, requires OEM-level programming before it will function correctly in the vehicle.
What is crash data and why does it matter?
Crash data (also called event data or deployment data) is information recorded by the airbag control module at the moment of a collision, including vehicle speed, delta-V (change in velocity), seat belt status, airbag deployment sequence, and sensor readings. This data is stored permanently in the ACM and can be retrieved using specialized equipment. Crash data is used by insurance companies, accident reconstruction experts, and legal proceedings to document what occurred during a collision event. The module cannot be reused after storing crash data.
What is the occupant classification module (OCM)?
The occupant classification module (OCM), also called the occupant detection system (ODS) or seat weight sensor module, monitors the weight and position of the front passenger seat occupant. It controls the passenger airbag enable/disable function, suppressing the airbag when a child seat or small occupant is detected and enabling it for adult occupants. After seat replacement, collision repairs involving the seat, or seat mat replacement, the OCM must be reprogrammed and the seat mat calibrated to ensure the system functions correctly.
Can you program airbag modules on-site?
Yes, Fuzetech provides mobile airbag module programming throughout Southern California. We come to your collision center, repair shop, or dealership with our OEM-level programming equipment and program replacement ACMs on-site. This eliminates the need to transport vehicles or wait for a dealer programming appointment, keeping your shop’s workflow moving.
What causes the airbag warning light to come on?
The airbag warning light can be triggered by a wide range of faults including: a faulty or disconnected crash sensor, a damaged seat belt pretensioner, a clock spring fault (common after steering repairs), a low battery voltage event, stored crash data from a prior collision, OCM or seat mat faults, SRS wiring damage, or a failed airbag control module. The only way to correctly diagnose the cause is with a professional SRS scan tool that can read the specific fault code stored in the ACM. Never clear SRS codes without identifying and repairing the underlying fault.
